Blog #6: Podcast for ESL Students

Restaurant Lingo For Beginners

This podcast is designed for mid-level beginning ESL students. It focuses on vocabulary and questions commonly used in restaurants.

How to listen:


Before listening, review the following vocab list:

Words
Appetizer- a small sized meal you eat before your main meal.
Side- small amount of food you eat with the main meal
Dessert- a sweet food you eat after your main meal
Specials- meals on sale
Bill- amount of money you owe for your meal
Server- man or woman who asks what you want and brings your food

Questions:
What do you have to drink?
Do you have any specials today?

  1. One of the things I liked about your podcast was how comprehensive it was. Having not only the vocab words but also the definitions makes preparing the lesson very easy.

  2. Great lesson! I think you did a great job choosing a topic that is important to second language learners. Helping them navigate through a menu and a restaurant is a great way to get them out into the field, and was a great use of task-based learning. Great pace, also.

  3. Erin: I'm glad you appreciated the list of vocab words with definitions. Our goal was to help students get familiar with the words so that they would be able to understand the overall meaning of the dialogue on the podcast. Also, seeing the vocab before listening to the podcast will hopefully allow students to pick out the use of the vocab during the dialogue, as well as pick-up on the meaning of it.
